£20,000 bill for long-term care

Care for the elderly will deteriorate without a controversial new care insurance scheme, Health Secretary Andy Burnham insisted last night.

As he prepared to unveil the biggest shake-up of social care in a generation, Mr Burnham told the Daily Mail that the Government has not yet decided whether to make payments into the scheme voluntary or compulsory.

He is today expected to publish proposals to ask for a contribution of between £12,000 and £20,000 in exchange for a guarantee of long-term care

This would either be paid during working life or be deducted from a member’s estate after death.

The sum would be less than the average £30,000 now paid by those who need a place in a care home in their final years.
