Localis hosted a controversial fringe event at the Conservative Party Conference on Tuesday 9 October entitled ‘Back Off Brussels! Is Europe a barrier to localism?’

Discussion topics ranged from the interpretation of EU law by UK courts and public agencies, the Climate Change Act and the possibility of a local sales tax. Highlights included:
- Eric Pickles MP giving an insight into his early days as SoS for CLG and speaking passionately against restrictions on planning by the EU.
- Sir Merrick Cockell suggesting that councils might be able to demand more of Brussels in getting funding to invest in growth.
- Phillip Souta sharing his expertise on EU procurement and structural funds.
