The Government has said it hopes Manchester will be the first of many cities to win greater devolution of powers after reaching an ‘historic’ settlement.
Chair of the Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA), Lord Peter Smith, said it was a ‘momentous’ day for the region after an agreement was struck with chancellor George Osborne.
The agreement includes a mayor being elected to lead GMCA, chair its meetings and allocate responsibilities to its cabinet – made up of the leaders of each of Greater Manchester’s 10 local authorities – from 2017.
