‘Air pollution: are we ignoring the threat?’
In conjunction with PA Consulting, Localis will be hosting a private round table discussion in London with council leaders and chief executives, senior civil servants and LEP chairs and chief executives that will address air quality in the UK’s cities.
Air quality has rightly received significant media attention over the last 3 months. This has highlighted its direct health impact, with Public Health England estimating that 5% of deaths in the UK in 2010 were attributable to long-term exposure to air pollution. From a government perspective, air quality will also impact finances (with many UK local authorities potentially liable for huge fines where air pollution exceeds permitted levels) and regeneration/growth (where planning permission may not be granted in areas of high pollution where a development has an adverse air quality impact).
Conducted under Chatham House rules, this roundtable will consider what can be done about poor air quality, bringing together senior stakeholders from central and local government and the private sector. Specifically we will address:
-
How big a problem is air pollution, and whose problem is it?
-
What can be done to improve air quality? Why hasn’t more been done to so far?
-
How can local and central government, and business engage more effectively to manage air pollution?
This event will be held in London on Tuesday 8th September. If you would be interested in hearing more about this event, please contact Jack Airey on jack.airey@localis.org.uk.
