A new report has suggested that UK charities are being hampered by a number of factors in their effort to engage with the public sector and help provide services to those in need of them.
Published by the National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO) and 14 partner organisations, it argues that more openness and flexibility would help the sector achieve its aims of offering statutory services in the UK.
While some steps have been taken to achieve this, more innovation is needed if it is to become a major part of the British services landscape, according to the NCVO.
Sir Stuart Etherington, NCVO chief executive officer, said: “It’s crucial that bureaucracy does not hinder creativity and innovation in developing services for the people who need them.”
He added that the voluntary sector’s main strength is its ability to respond organically and innovatively to problems.
Writing in the Guardian, Localis senior policy officer Steven Howell recently urged the government to open local government up to the private and voluntary sectors.
