Housing finance system to be ‘dismantled’

The much maligned council housing finance system is to be scrapped, housing minister John Healey has said.
Mr Healey said: “I will signal the intent to dismantle the housing revenue account system. I will dismantle the system that was put in place when the government did not believe in local councils.”
A Department for Communities & Local Government spokeswoman told LGC councils would be able to keep “all the proceeds” from rental income and sales.
“It’s about allowing councils to take more responsibility to meet their housing needs in their area,” she said.
Mr Healey’s comments come as part of wide range of housing measures were announced including increasing the council house building programme.
